After last Saturday’s loss against Wolves, David Moyes has managed WHU for 38 Premier League games, a complete season’s worth split over two periods.
Let’s look at his record statistically.
His win percentage with WHU is around 28% (Claret & Hugh) the worst of any manager in the club’s history.
When only Premier League results are taken into account, the most important thing to fans right now, his record is even worse, a 26.3% win percentage.
Even more worryingly, in his first stint at WHU, 2017-2018, they had 27 Premier League fixtures, winning 8, a win percentage of 29.6%. Since he returned in 2020, there have been 11 Premier League fixtures, winning only 2. A win percentage of 18.2%!!!
In my (humble) opinion, Moyes’ win record, as bad as it is, doesn’t fully indicate the true gravity of the situation.
Let’s look at points taken from the maximum possible, again, 38 Premier League games only.
In 2017/18 for the 27 games Moyes was in charge, WHU took 33 points from a possible 81, 40.7% of the available points.
In the 11 games since he returned, WHU have taken 8 points from a possible 33, less than 25% of the available points.
WHU do not win enough games, and they don’t draw enough of the others.
From the remaining 8 games WHU probably need an absolute minimum of 9 points to avoid relegation, 37.5% of the available points.
I think most fans question Moyes’ team selections and set-up, for example, a lone striker being his default and stubborn choice.
He also seems to have a complete lack of a plan B for any game. This was clearly highlighted on Saturday when Wolves’ substitute Traoré came on. Moyes said in his post-match interview “We expected Adam Traore to start, or to come on”.
How had he prepared the team for that? Bringing on Lanzini, this season's big under-performer, a few minutes after Traoré, and then making two more substitutions in the last 10 minutes of the game. Moyes appears paralysed by indecision.
West Ham’s woes cannot be blamed on Moyes alone, many fans consider Gold, Sullivan & Brady to be the villains. The current squad, with a few notable exceptions, show little spirit and fight.
Moyes says, he’s a winner. The stats do not back this up.
If he stubbornly finishes the season his way, surely WHU are down.
